Letter: Dear Mr. Tengdahl In progression with my research I intend to use my free time these holidays to really get a grip on my question and start working out in advance the major problems and time consumers that I'm going to have to work around so I can complete my project easily. One of the major things I'll be working on is narrowing down a list of possible songs and analysing their lyrics so a can start working on a storyboard for my final piece. As well as this I'm going to try and find out the sort of restrictions I’m going to have with my photography by talking to my close friends that are studying the subject of photography at Tea Tree Gully Tafe. I will start my online research and develop myself a list of web resources that I will be able to refer to during my topic I will attempt to find some examples of videos movies and preferably music videos that recreate what I’m attempting to do if I can find decent example I will analyse these and use aspects of their construction and use them to create my own. Apart form this I won’t be able to get started on taking photos until I have my story sorted. But I will need to consider the ethics of using people’s images and make sure that I have the full willing consent of anyone involved in the making of my final piece. These are my goals but restricted time may mean that they are not all achievable organization and prioritising will make up a great deal of my holiday plans.

Week Two of the Holidays:
So i checked with my photography friend who said that she would be happy to explain any methods and help me with and of the photo based parts of my projects. I have begun sorting but have not yet delved into what song i will choose but as part of my preliminary research i have dug up a few videos that demonstrate the sort of thing i am trying to do.

The Pen Story - Olympus Camera Advert
All three of these videos use stop motion to create the 'story' for their music. I intend to do an analysis for at least two or see if I can find a better examples of similar quality. The only other progress I have have made is doing a small amount of reading on stop motion (and I will post a list of web links shortly) and I have also spoken to two friends of mine that may be willing to let me use their SLR camera's so I can get good quality photos. I have also spoken to one of my close friends who has recently started a band and would be willing to be in my video/photos.
The key thing at the moment is what song i'm going to use. The song will determine what my video will be, who are the characters? What is the storyline? What are the main theme`s etc. It will also determine how long it will be which also translates how many photos I will need, as well as allowing me to finally start on what will be the bulk of my work. I am narrowing down a list of songs from my personal iTunes library because i don't want to be using a song i don't like and i'm selecting songs that have a consistant beat (so i can put photos to it) and more importantly that have a good storyline. Once i have chose a song i will be able to begin the all-important storyboarding phase and then move on to collect all my still-shots.
Playing around
Experimentation with a tennis ball and a digital camera. Also my first time using iMovie, not great and not serious.
Week Three
I have revised my question to stay far away from any possible copywright infringements as possible. I have decided to create my video clip for a local Adelaide band that i will then give to them for publicity use. The upshot of this is that i will have a real practical use for my outcome and that i will be helping local musicians. This will also let me develop my communication capability by being able to discuss back and forth with the band consider photographing them as part of the video as well as using their insight as to the meaning of the song so that my video will be genuine and have real meaning to the band as well as myself. The band i have contacted is called Mountbatten, former Triple J Unearthed artists We Grow Up. After making first contact with Anthony Golding i now have a digital copy of the band's EP The Night is a Dream i now have permission from the band to use any one of these tracks for my project.
Ethical considerations.
After revising my topic to avoid copyright problems I now have to take a better look about the ethical considerations regarding my topic.
To create a video that might now be used for publicity I have to be very careful not to offend anyone. Nothing that might seem derogatory towards any group of people can be shown to make sure that it is suitable for the general public, should it be used in that manner.
Also I have to get permission from everybody in my video/photographs to use their image. If I am in a public setting I need to make sure I blur any recognizable faces.
Everyone taking part in my video/photographs will be fully aware of what there image is being used for and will have the option to pull out at any time no matter how it might set me back. The possible uses of my video will be made clear and all participants will be made to sign and agree to my use of their captured image.
Similarly anybody that I survey or interview for either public or expert opinion or even anyone that I use their spoken word as advice or instructions must be documented. I must have permission to use people’s words or idea’s in my project and must have their full consent to act upon or use their words.

The next step in before i start my video is to create a storyboard. Storyboards are important to plan out your thinking and work out what shots you need to get before you set off. The "script" i'll be working with is the lyrics and meaning of the song.
The importance of a storyboard is paramount the best way to develop my video and it plan out is by making a "draft" so to speak it will mean i wont have to deal with so many extra problems while shooting/photographing.

So updates are needed I have completed my story board and are well into the shooting and editing stages. I have two full scenes shot with another two or three hopefully being completed this weekend! To edit, after much deliberation, I am using iMovie a program already installed on my computer.
Getting over problems shooting and editing is becoming easier and easier as I become more familiar with the skills and limitations. Some of the things i have had to overcome so far in shooting have been blurry shots, un-even ground and changing amounts of light but changes to the storyboard and alteration to camera settings have been fairly simple to implement. Editing has been compromising as much as problem solving, there are only certain settings for the amount of time stills are shown on the program and other program defaults like Ken Burns have proved troublesome as i learn more about the program. The help of my resident experts (Tafe photography students and Tv editors) has been essential as I start to get further and further into the bulk of my project.
